South Africa — The end of the Johannes Jacobus Steyn case, better known as the Sunday Rapist, is nearing.
Steyn began his lewd deeds in November 2008 after which he persisted this deeds which included kidnapping and rape in June and November of 2009 in Rustenburg and Potchefstroom in the North West Province. He then in February the following year kidnapped and raped a 16 year old girl in Vanderbijlpark and in March 2010 he kidnapped and raped another teenager in Rustenburg.
The serial rapist allegedly failed to kidnap a 18 year old in Potchefstroom on 15 August, but succeeded in kidnapping the 14 year old Lazanne Farmer and her 16 year old friend.
Later in the same month he raped a 15 year old in Carletonville near an industrial area and on 31 Oktober 2010 he kidnapped and raped a 11 year old female from Krugersdorp West.
Steyn is facing 13 charges of rape, 10 of kidnapping, one of murder and six charges of sexual assault.
According to a shocked neighbour Steyn was a good guy and never gave anyone reason to suspect him he said "He[Steyn] was always friendly and always neat. He was such a good person. That is why it is such a shock." The Neighbour continued by saying "I cannot believe it. Nobody can believe it. He did not drink, he did not smoke,"
Little did Steyn’s neighbours know that the same man they described as a gentlemen and a family guy was a convicted sex offender who did four hours of community service every Sunday after the court found him guilty of sexual assualt in 2007.
After allegedly killing Louise de Waal, a pupil from Die Ruiter skool in Florida, Steyn fled the province in his golden Mercedes Benz to KwaZulu-Natal South Coast where he would have commited suicide by the sea if Detective Peet du Toit, who is also involved with the Krugersdorp Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit did not persuade him to go to the Margate police station where he handed himself in to authorities on 13 October 2011.
Steyn first appeared in court on 17 October in 2011 the court then remanded his next court date to 13 December of the same year because the prosecution stated that they needed time to properly conduct their forensic investigations.
Upon arrival of the second court date Steyn for the first time revealed his bearded face to the public, the case was again postponed by the Magistrate until 1 February of this year, this was done to allow the state to present the full report of it’s investigation. The court has set the date of 7 March to centralise all the charges.
It is expected that this tragic story will then finally come to an end after three long and painful years.
