South Africa — The three-year-old Isabella Kruger is in a stable condition after she underwent a groundbreaking skin graft operation at the Garden City Clinic, Johannesburg.
40 pieces of skin, specially cloned and grown in the United States, were transplanted onto the back, chest, face, arms and legs of Isabella on Monday, 11 June.
Esme Abrahams, Garden City hospital manager, said that Kruger is doing well.
"Pippie had a quiet night. She’s been placed on a ventilator and it was
just routine care that was rendered throughout the night," said Abrahams.
The cloned skin was rushed to the hospital as it only has a 24-hour shelf life and it was flown in from Boston, United States, on a 21-hour flight.
Kruger will be sedated for the following week to reduce any pain.
When the girl will be allowed to go home is still unknown.
