Mister Denzil Pillay from the top of the mountain were I stood, moments before getting anxious - File Photo |
I, Almie Naudé, came to Aloe Ridge Hotel as a Cadet Journalist at the Caxton Cadet School, based on the hotel grounds, on the 1st of March 2012.
I always had a taste for adventure, so me and one of my fellow cadets, Denzil Pillay, to go up a small "mountain"...
Once we got there however Denzil decided that he doesn't want to go up the mountain like rock anymore(it was too steep to his liking).
So...I went up the rock by myself, at least I could still see Denzil at the bottom. I still tried to convince him to also climb up with me...but he, cleverly enough, refused. He told me that he'll wait for me at the bottom and that I should go on further without him, so I did exactly that. Denzil lit a cigarette and sat down.
I browsed around looking for a better way to climb down, but I soon found that there was no other way than the way I got up. At this stage I panicked. I told Denzil to wait there, I played a siren I have on my phone and waved to people attending a wedding on a nearby platform...but all they did was waving back at me...I was left with no other choice...I called 112 Emergency Services, for them to send out a helicopter to come get me off the mountain, the dispatcher was bedazzled that I suddenly developed a phobia to climb down the rock I climbed up an hour ago.
Denzil went to find help, he returned with Endy and Dex, also Cadet School journalists, and they pulled me down by a small tree and I was too scared to let go of the tree, but they finally convinced me to let go of the tree.
South African Police Service officers arrived at the hotel where I stood with hotel management and I told them that I was no longer stuck and they left.
This was the first time in the history of the hotel that someone got stuck in one of their mountains, it feels weird that I made history...thinking back however...I could have fallen down the mountain and died... but here I am laughing about it, I will never do it again!!!! And until this day I am known as the Mountain Goat, and I have established a group called Mountain Goats United, a group for people who got stuck on mountains and the people who saved people getting stuck on these mountains.
